Association Achievements

Achievements since WPNA inception

Security

Since 1991, our Association has maintained a security patrol staffed by off duty City of Atlanta police officers to provide additional security protection for our members, including the establishment of an out-of-town monitoring program for Association Members.

Sidewalks

Our Association obtained a special City of Atlanta ordinance which permitted the construction of four (4) foot sidewalks two feet from the road along West Paces Ferry Road from Paces Forest Road to Northside Drive, raised the funds to construct the sidewalks, and oversaw the installation of the sidewalks.

Traffic Issues

The Association has been instrumental in addressing several neighborhood traffic issues, including,

Speed Humps

The Association successfully lobbied the City of Atlanta to install speed humps on Rilman Road and Pinestream Road.

Traffic Lights

The Association successfully lobbied the City of Atlanta to install a traffic light at the corner of Rilman Road and West Paces Ferry Road.

Zoning Issues

Our Association has been instrumental in several key zoning issues, including:

Forum Project

Successfully opposing a proposed 2.1 million square feet shopping mall on the site of the current Forum Development, effectively limiting the development to the zoning classification that was in existence prior to the commencement of the project. The Association earlier successfully opposed a proposed luxury hotel development on this same property.

Mann House

Successfully opposing a zoning proposal that would have allowed the construction and operation of a congregate and long-term health care facility along West Paces Ferry Road.

AT&T Cell Tower

Worked with City of Atlanta officials to redesign the AT&T Cell Tower at the Atlanta Water Works property at the corner of Moores Mill and Northside Drive to appear as a native pine tree.

Safety Issues

Our Association has worked with area shopping centers to make them safer for our Members, including an initiative during the 1990s to increase the night lighting at the three (3) neighborhood shopping centers.

Accomplishments of the West Paces Neighborhood Association, Inc. Working Through NPU A

Subdivision Ordinance

Worked with the City of Atlanta to establish a workable subdivision ordinance

Tree Ordinance

Worked with officials to establish a feasible and practical tree ordinance

GRTA

Coordinated development planning with GRTA to protect the single family character of the West Paces Ferry/Northside Neighborhood and surrounding neighborhoods

Zoning Issues

Reviewed a large number of zoning issues having potential for very significant impact on our neighborhood, including:

Church of the Apostles Working with the Church of the Apostles to limit commercial activity in the church area, and successfully opposing an earlier proposal to build a luxury hotel on the property.
Paran Pointe Worked to limit construction in the Paran Pointe project to residential homes
West Paces Ferry/Paces Ferry Worked to prohibit a change in zoning that would have permitted the construction of commercial establishments and a luxury hotel
Mount Paran Church of God Worked to insure that the expansion of the Mount Paran Church of God did not overwhelm the surrounding neighborhood and alter its residential character.
Trinity School Worked with Trinity School in its relocation from Northside Parkway to former IBM property.
Atlanta Speech School Worked with the Atlanta Speech School and Girls High in their relocation to the former Trinity School property.
West Paces Ferry Road Development Facilitated negotiations between developer and other interested groups which resulted in the number of planned homes being reduced from thirty (30) to twelve (12).
West Paces PUD Facilitated negotiations between developer and other interested groups to reach a development plan acceptable to all interested parties.
Mount Paran Road/I-75 Exit Ramp Worked with state and Federal officials to coordinate ramp development plan with the neighbor goals and objectives.
Mount Paran Road Country Store Facilitated negotiations between community groups and the new operator to allow a mutually acceptable renovation and expansion plan.
Holy Spirit Church School Expansion Facilitated negotiations between Holy Spirit Church and neighborhood groups to allow a mutually acceptable expansion of the high school
St. Anne's Church Expansion Facilitated negotiations between St. Anne's Church and neighborhood groups to devise a mutually acceptable expansion plan.
AT&T Cell Tower (Ridgewood Road) Worked with City of Atlanta officials to cause the relocation of an AT&T cell tower on Ridgewood Road that violated numerous zoning and property restrictions.
Sewage Storage Tank Worked with the City of Atlanta and neighborhood groups to develop an alternative to the proposed 90 million gallon sewage holding tank that was proposed for the horse meadow bounded by Broadland Road and Northside Drive.
Northside Sewage Force Main Worked with the City of Atlanta to devise alternatives to the proposed sewage force main down Northside Parkway and Moores Mill Road to the R.M. Clayton Treatment Plant.
Fences and Gates Facilitated discussions between neighborhood associations, developers and homeowners to limit the proliferation of high fences and gates.
Northside Parkway Facilitated discussions among developers, property owners and City of Atlanta officials to limit the proliferation of commercial development on Northside Parkway.

Citizens' Advisory Committee

Established a Citizens' Advisory Committee for Zone 2 of the Atlanta Police Department, the result of which is a bimonthly meeting between the Zone 2 Commander and interested neighborhood groups to review neighborhood criminal activity.

Shopping Center Lighting and Safety

Worked with neighborhood shopping centers and Georgia Power to improve lighting for the safety of shoppers and employees.

Traffic Lights

Worked with the City of Atlanta to modify traffic lights at West Conway/Mount Paran Road and Moores Mill/West Wesley Road.
